Mr. Md. Nazrul Huda

Mr. Md. Nazrul Huda joined Rupali Bank PLC as Director and Chairman of the Board of Directors on 15 August 2024. Before taking up this role, he served with distinction at Bangladesh Bank for 35 years, including his tenure as Deputy Governor from 2002 to 2011. From 2020 to August 2024, he was also a Director on the Board of Directors of Bangladesh Bank. In addition to his central banking experience, he served as the Country Chief of the Bangladesh Representative Office of Habib Bank AG Zurich, Switzerland, based in Dhaka. Mr. Huda completed his Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Dhaka in 1974. Later, in 1985, he pursued post-graduate studies in Economics at the University of New England, Australia.
Widely respected as an eminent figure in Bangladesh's central banking landscape, Mr. Huda began his career as an Assistant Director at Bangladesh Bank. Over time, he rose through the ranks, combining his deep knowledge, unwavering dedication, and exceptional leadership qualities, eventually becoming the Deputy Governor. His professional journey has been marked by notable contributions in areas critical to central banking, including policy formulation, regulatory frameworks, and supervisory practices.
Throughout his career, Mr. Huda played a central role in numerous policy, institutional, and legal reforms that reshaped the country’s banking sector. He was instrumental in the introduction of market based interest rate policy as well as the implementation of a Risk-Weighted Asset-Based Capital Adequacy System in the banking sector. He also led efforts to adopt international standards in asset classification and prepared a comprehensive classification manual for banks.
Mr. Huda was also deeply involved in the drafting of important legislation, including the Bank Company Act (1991), the Financial Institutions (Non-Bank) Act (1993), and the Financial Court Act (1990).
Beyond his work at Bangladesh Bank, Mr. Huda undertook several significant assignments that had lasting impacts on the financial sector. He served as a World Bank consultant on bank supervision in the Commercial Banking Restructuring Project in Bangladesh. He worked with the Government-appointed Bank Reforms Committee to recommend strategies for building a more competitive, efficient, and financially sound banking system. He was the convener of the working group for enhancing cooperation among nationalized commercial banks and also led the steering committee responsible for the implementation of the Basel-II Capital Accord in Bangladesh.
Additionally, Mr. Huda served as an Advisor to the Maldives Monetary Authority, where he was responsible for establishing prudential regulatory frameworks, introducing off-site supervision practices, reviewing banking laws, and strengthening supervisory capabilities. Recognized nationally as an intellectual with deep expertise in economics and finance, Mr. Huda has long been admired for his insight and contributions to the country’s financial governance. He was born on 15 August 1953 into a respected Muslim family in Khulna District. He is married to Mrs. Farida Nazrul, and the couple is blessed with a son and a daughter.
